The North Dakota Highway Patrol reported two drivers in the incident also sustained injuries.
Todd Nelson, 43, was driving a 1988 Oldsmobile south on Burke County No. 11 (88th Avenue Northwest) from Flaxton around 5:20 p.m. Russel Nelson was an occupant of the Oldsmobile.
Bill Atol, 54, of Williston, was driving a 2008 Chevy pickup west on North Dakota Highway 50 from Mohall to a location north of Battleview. Driver Todd Nelson failed to stop at a stop sign. His vehicle struck the Atol vehicle with its front, center.
The Nelson vehicle came to rest in the south ditch, facing north. The Atol vehicle came to rest in the south ditch, facing northwest. Russel Nelson was removed from the Oldsmobile and Powers Lake Ambulance crews performed CPR on him. Russel Nelson was transported to the Mountrail Medical Center in Stanley, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Both drivers also were transported to Mountrail County Medical Center.
Responding to the scene were the NDHP, the Burke County Sheriff’s Office, the Powers Lake Ambulance, fire and rescue crews, the Powers Lake Police Department and the Stanley Ambulance.
The NDHP report states Russel Nelson was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. It is unknown if Todd Nelson was wearing a seat belt but the report indicates Atol was wearing a seat belt.
Both vehicles were totaled.
