Shortly before 1 p.m. Williston Firefighters responded to the scene of the structure’s roof top. A skate boarder had spotted smoke from the structure’s roof.
“We got called out for a fire in the pavillion, and it appears that lightning struck their Christmas ornaments,” said Williston Fire Chief Alan Hanson. “That can take several hours for something like that to smolder. It probably happened some time last night. There is no reason to believe anything suspicious.”
The Christmas ornament and lights were kept there from the annual Light Up Harmon Park which runs between Thanksgiving Friday until New Year’s Eve.
“We had a storm run here through the night,” Hanson said. “(The pavilion) had a big metal star on there, and we took it down. That’s where the fire was started where that thing comes down. It’s not plugged in so it’s not electrical running to it. It only makes sense that it’s an electrical-caused fire.” Firefighters remained at the scene for 20 minutes.
Hanson believed the pavilion, where the Williston City Band used to perform, will still be useable by the public. He was not concerned about water damage.
“Once they clean a few things up there and put a few new shingles up there, it will fix up fairly quickly,” Hanson said. “It’s designed to be an outdoor facility. It’s designed to be wet.”
He estimated damage to be $200.
