A restored Army jeep was unable to make a steep approach and rolled backwards over one of its passengers early Saturday morning, about one-half mile north of Noonan.

Darnell Prokopetz, 30, of Estevan, Saskatchewan, Canada was transported to an Estevan hospital and later a Regina hospital, according to the Divide County Sheriff's Office. He reportedly sustained injuries to his pelvis area.

"It was around 7 a.m. There were seven people crammed into a restored Willy's Army jeep," said Deputy Cameron Kamlitz. "They attempted to go up a steep approach. One guy fell out the back of the jeep. The jeep rolled back on top of the fellow."

The driver of the vehicle Eugene Hagel, 43, of Estevan, remains in custody at the Williams County Correctional Center on the charge of leaving the scene of an accident where serious injuries occurred, a Class C felony.

Another member of the party had left to get help, but Hagel reported the accident site. He later turned himself into authorities.

Other charges may be pending. A court date is still being scheduled.
