WHS swimmers Kemp, Sullivan earn All-State honors By Sean Pitman, Sports EditorMANDAN - Williston’s boys swimming and diving team left the pool at the Mandan Community Center feeling like it swallowed too much water. “We false started in the 400 free relay and we had a great time, so it was real disappointing and a real frustrating way to end the meet,” said Williston coach Diana Farrenkopf. Even more frustrating was the fact the Coyotes had false started in the 200 medley relay to start the Boys State Swimming and Diving Championships, ensuring they’d finish at the bottom of the pile Saturday. “We would have broken the school record with our time in the 200 medley relay, so it was very disappointing as well,” said Farrenkopf. The day turned out to be full of ups and downs for the Coyotes as they swam pretty well individually, but the team couldn’t put it together. Joe Kemp and Brandon Sullivan earned First-Team All-State honors with their performances. “I was very pleased with the guys, we swam about as well as we could individually and didn’t really lose any ground, for the most part,” said Farrenkopf. Kemp did almost exactly as he planned taking second in the 100 breaststroke and finishing third in the 100 IM. “Joe had an excellent breaststroke, cutting two seconds. He wanted to get under a minute and was right there,” said Farrenkopf. Kemp finished in 1:00.44. Kemp was third with a 2:05.28, .04 of a second out of second place in the 200 IM. “A coach told me after watching Joe’s race he appreciated seeing a kid not be able to get out of the pool for a minute afterwards because he gave it all he had,” said Farrenkopf. Sullivan was supposed to duke it out with Grand Forks swimmer Ethan Nimens for the 100 backstroke title, but while the two battled it out in the middle lanes, West Fargo’s Jake Weible came up on the outside lane to win it in 56.40. Nimens was second at 56.53 and Sullivan settled for third at 57.86. “Brandon didn’t have his best time, but he looked liked he was swimming strong,” said Farrenkopf. Sullivan also finished 13th with a 52.02 in the 100 free. Jordan Hahn finished well taking eighth in the 50 free with a 23.48, and was 10th in the 100 free with a 51.60. He had said he just hoped to make the finals and he finished top eight in the 50. “I thought Jordan had some very good races,” said Farrenkopf. Brandon Shaffer and Cooper Long swam side by side in the 100 butterfly consolation finals and finished together, with Shaffer taking 13th in 59.88 and Long was 14th in 1:00.03, moving up two spots from the prelims. Shaffer also swam 5:24.05 to place 15th in the 500 free. Experiencing some more bad luck was diver Cole McFarlane, who made the finals. However, on his first attempt in the finals, he slipped on the board and banged his knee, costing him a higher finish. After another diver slipped off the board, it was wiped down by an official, but it was too late for McFarlane who could only count two of the three dives for a 255.40 total and a 15th-place finish. “We had some ups and downs, but everyone that came to state cut times, so you have to be excited about that,” said Coach Farrenkopf. In Friday’s preliminaries, both Kemp and Sullivan finished second in their prime events. Kemp swam a 1:02.97 in the 100 breaststroke, while Sullivan swam a 57.51 to finish second in the backstroke. Kemp also was second in the 200 IM with his time of 2:05.01 and Sullivan swam a 52.11 in the 100 free, to finish 13th and make the consolation finals. Kemp’s 200 IM time broke the Williston school record of 2:06-something set by David Nutz in 1997. Jordan Hahn had a good day, swimming seventh to make the finals of the 50 free, with a time of 23.30, and he just missed the finals in the 100 free with a time of 51.93. Brandon Shaffer made the consolation finals in both the 500 free and 100 fly events. He finished 14th in the fly with a time of 1:00.29, while he was 14th in the 500 free as well with a time of 5:22.30. Also making the consolation finals in the 100 fly was Cooper Long, who was 16th in 1:00.52, grabbing the last spot in the finals. In diving, Cole McFarlane finished 10th with a 143.05 point total, while Alex Kalil was 18th in 90.65. Williston also had some swimmers just miss out on the finals. Long was an alternate in the 200 free, finishing 18th in 2:00.14, while Michael Farrenkopf was 18th in the 500 free with a 5:28.53 time, and Jeff Kleven finished 18th in the 100 breast at 1:10.42.
