The Committee on the Employment and Advancement of People with Disabilities (CEAD) revisited handicapped parking issues and elected a chair and vice-chair Wednesday.

The group assembled in the basement of Job Service North Dakota.

Conflicts have caused some board members to step down.

Penny Pozgay was elected chair and Dawn Bonner was elected vice-chairman. However, they are in need of three more people to serve on the executive board. Nominees will be sought in the next month. Names of nominees will be brought before a future Williston City Commission meeting, and that board will appoint them. The group tabled nominating committee members.

Pozgay also announced she was hired to be the part-time worker for the Williston satellite office of Independence Inc. "There are a lot of businesses that simply do not have parking for people with a disability or it is not adequately marked," Pozgay said.

Pozgay said in the coming weeks that CEAD members will start marking down businesses that do not have adequate parking for a person with a disability.

"They must have a sign posted, and it is a certain number of parking spaces out eight," she said. "There are very clear guidelines. It has to be a sign. It has to visible with a car parked in front of it. The sign has to be easily seen, and it has to be closest to the door. It has to have the internationally accepted sign of blue and white."

Elaine Sinness of the City Planning Department said there are city ordinances that spell out what the requirements are for each building.

Pozgay also said they will also be seeking others throughout the community who would be interested in participating in CEAD.

It also was announced that Williston will be among a series of sites for the Upper Great Plain Transportation Institute. The local meeting is slated for March 25 at Airport International Inn. For more information about registering, call 701-231-7767. CEAD members felt this would be an opportunity to relate their issues.

Board members also said they are still willing to come to businesses and fraternal organizations to talk about their mission of networking people with disablities to find work and being an advocate for people with disabilities on their issues.

The next board meeting is slated for 3:30 p.m. March 19 at Job Service North Dakota.
