Because City Government is the government closest to most citizens, and the one with the most direct daily impact upon its residents, municipal officials feel they have a responsibility to pass along their understanding of public services and their benefits.
“We are excited about the upcoming event,” said Mayor Ward Koeser.
The event is an essay contest designed to encourage young people to think about public service and future community leadership.
The contest is voluntary and is open to all third grade students in Williston. The title of the essay will be, “If I Were Mayor for a Day.” The winning authors will receive a monetary award and will be invited to have breakfast with the Mayor and his wife.
All third grade teachers located in Williston received an informational letter the week of Feb. 11. The winning authors will attend the March 11 City Commission meeting to receive their award. Winning entries will be forwarded to the State League of Cities office for further competition.
The City Commissioners believe that through this event, the City of Williston will encourage young people to think and be more informed about the services of our local government which, in turn, will lead to more knowledgeable citizen participation in the future.
