WHS matmen split with Saints, Midgets

Perhaps visions of sugar plums were dancing in their heads? Or maybe the thought of no homework for a week hit them? Or they might have been thinking about teammate Seth Jorgenson, who went under the knife that day?

Whatever the reason, the Williston wrestling team couldn't seem to mentally get into its home dual with Bismarck St. Mary's, falling to the Saints 46-24 Friday.

The Coyotes had just come off a tough 44-27 win over Dickinson on the road Thursday.

"We were not ready to wrestle and that's no excuse. Against Dickinson I thought we were real aggressive. Even when we made mistakes, we were going hard," said Coyotes coach Chuck Michaelson.

"We're only effective when we are non-stop."

Starting at 160 pounds, the Saints won the first four matches to jump out to a 16-0 lead.

Matt Jensen finally got Williston on the board with a 44-second pin at heavyweight. However, the Coyotes lost three of the next four to fall behind 28-12.

Morgan Axelson got the fastest pin of the day with a 33-second time at 130 pounds to pull within 28-18.

After a Williston forfeit, Calvin Sandberg got a pin in 3:17 to stay within 10 points. However, St. Mary's got back-to-back pins by Joe Vetter (145) and Collin Engelhardt (152) to seal the win.

Williston was without a few starters and had two open weights. One of those missing was Jorgenson, who tore his ACL in the Dickinson Classic last weekend.

He underwent surgery on Friday, but one of the best 215-pounders in the state is lost for the season.

"It sounds like everything went well in surgery. You take a guy like that out of your lineup, it will affect you. He brings almost sure points to the team and probably tonight he'd give us six points, instead we give up six, so that's a pretty good swing," said Michaelson.

Michaelson said he hopes everyone gets healthy over the break and they have some plans to adjust for the loss of Jorgenson in the second half of the season.
