Thanks to the efforts of the Williston State College Student Senate, you will be able to enjoy another great evening of festivities in conjunction with the home basketball games at “The Well.”

The WSC Student Senate is sponsoring “Patriotic Night” this evening and fans are encouraged to dress in red, white and blue, to go along with your Teton green.

This will put you in the right frame of mind to take part in the “Salute our Troops” program that will be featured throughout the entire evening. Action on the hardwood will feature the WSC Tetons against the Pioneers of Miles Community College of Miles City, Mont.

You are encouraged to be on hand early to take part in all of the events.

Just prior to the women's tip-off, slated for 6 p.m. this evening, the flags will be presented by members of the National Guard including members from Williston's 818th and 1/816th and Minot's 164th Engineer Battalion.

This will be followed by singing of the National Anthem by Miss Williston State College Allayna Kalmik.

The evening will serve as an opportunity to salute the troops who have been previously deployed in defense of our country, along with those who are about to answer the call.

ASBT SPINNING WHEEL

With this month celebrating President's Day and due to the fact the birthday of two former leaders of our country fall during this time frame, it's only fitting to have some fun.

That's where the American State Bank & Trust Co. of Williston comes in providing the ASB&T Spinning Wheel that will be used to give away a number of items that are being termed “fun little patriotic birthday prizes.”

FAMILY SUPPORT GROUP

Tonight will also feature apple pie direct from Economart and for a donation to the Troop Family Support Group, you can add some ice cream from the Teton ice cream stand for a nominal fee.

During the halftime intermission of both games, all fans will be able to participate in the Halfcourt Troop Shoot for a fee of $1.

While a number of prizes have been donated from community businesses, all proceeds will be given from this effort to the Troop Support Group.

SHIP THE SUPPLIES

Hey, if you don't want to step out on the court to take part in that activity, you can certainly drop some change in the “Buckets for Pocket Change” that will be available for fans to donate to the shipping fees which will enable organizers to be able to send the medical supplies to Dr. R.J. Moen's work at the Burn Clinic in Iraq.

This is a support project that is being spearheaded by Mercy Medical Foundation. We encourage you to take part in these efforts.

KALMIK IN UTAH

Earlier we had told you about the fact Allayna Kalmik was heading for the National Deaflympics along with a group from the North Dakota School for the Deaf from Devils Lake.

While none of this group actually competed, this outing allowed a special time for them to be able to mingle and experience the festivities.

Kalmik, an active sophomore at WSC, tells us her experience earlier this month at the Deaflympics in Salt Lake City, Utah was, what she termed “Awesome and so amazing.”

She is taking a sign language course through the video network program at WSC and was able to accompany a number of students to this major event that featured athletes from some 30 countries who were either deaf or hard of hearing.

Reportedly more than 20,000 people were on hand and this proved to be an opportunity of a lifetime for Kalmik.

We send out a Scope Salute to this young lady who no doubt was a great ambassador for WSC and our community.

COWBOY HALL MEETING

Area residents are reminded the 12th annual meeting of the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame will be held in Mandan on Feb. 23-24.

Plans call for the annual membership meeting on Feb. 24 and at that time the Hall of Fame Trustees will discuss the nominees that will appear on the 2007 ballot for induction in the Hall of Fame.

Nearly 60 individuals have been nominated for induction into six categories, with the field being trimmed to 12.

From that a final group of six will be honored later this summer.

The group is still seeking funds to complete the $4 million dollar project which is up and running in Medora.

For further details you can call 250-1833 or go online at www.northdakotacowboy.com.

SCHMITZ NETS 1,000

Congratulations are certainly in order for former Williston High School basketball player Casey Schmitz on going over the 1,000 point mark in his collegiate career at South Dakota School of Mines at Rapid City, S.D.

He had spent his freshman season at the Colorado School of Mines prior to making the move to Rapid City.

Schmitz, now a senior, ventured back to North Dakota with his teammates over the weekend and posted DAC Conference wins over Minot State University and Dickinson State University.

The two wins also clinched home-court advantage for the Hardrockers for at least the first two rounds of the playoffs.

That left SDSM 14-13 on the season and 9-4 in the DAC.

Against Minot State Schmitz was able to net 13 points while adding 14 in the win over DSU.

Schmitz is the son of Cathy and John Schmitz of Williston.

We send out a Scope Salute on this major accomplishment.
