Without their top runners, the Williston boys and girls cross country teams probably didn't do as well as they could have in the Heen-Ihmels Invitational at the Williston Municipal Golf Course Thursday.

However, the teams did a little better than their coaches may have expected.

“We had an outstanding day, we had three younger girls move up and they all ran great, I was happy with the whole crew,” said Coyote girls coach Al Knutson, whose team finished fourth in the girls varsity race. “With all the distractions of a Homecoming week, the float building, the band, the parades, it's just hectic, and we performed as well as we ever have on Homecoming week.”

The girls were once again without last year's No. 1 runner, Kilee Sundt, who has been out all season with a back problem. She ran last week, but couldn't go again this week. “We're just hoping she can somehow get back for us for the state race,” said Knutson. The Williston boys ended fifth in the varsity race.

“Surprisingly, we were in the hunt, we ended fifth, but were only six spots out of third,” said Coyote boys coach Clint Chamberlin.

The boys were without No. 1 runner Joe Kemp, who had to drop out of last week's race with a sore leg, possibly due to tendinitis, but Chamberlin said they've had trouble nailing down the true source of the injury.

“The most important thing is we find a way to get Joe healthy, and as a team we need to get in a little better race shape,” said Chamberlin.

The next action for both Coyote teams will be the West Region meet at Souris Valley Golf Course in Minot Oct. 14.

Girls

Bismarck ran away with the team title with a score of 24, followed by Dickinson at 55 and Bowman at 76. Williston scored 109.

Leading the Williston charge was Whitney Harrison, who was eighth in 15:49. Hailey Horob, one of the junior high runners, finished just in front of teammate Mari Goldade as they finished 20th and 21st in 16:49 and 16:50, respectively.

Kristen Ceglowski and Danielle Clark, the other two younger runners to move up, placed 27th and 33rd at 17:00 and 17:09, respectively.

“Whitney and Mari had improved runs over last week, and 20 seconds between our second through fifth runners is pretty good,” said Knutson.

Also for the Coyotes, Angie Goebel was 51st at 18:02, Kiersten Kemp was 75th at 19:03, Andrea Thompson was 77th at 19:14, Cherisse Parker was 79th at 19:26 and Rachel Fearing was 86th at 19:45.

Tioga-Trinity Christian's Kelsey Lambrecht ran 43rd in 17:36.

Watford City finished eighth as a team led by Sibee Jokela who was 29th at 17:02, while Stephanie Deutsch was 35th at 17:18, Chelsey Moe was 57th at 18:15, Kristen Stenehjem was 67th at 18:48, Cora Wolff 78th at 19:14 and Jayme Johnson was 83rd at 19:36.

The Williston junior high girls had a strong day, taking first place in their race with 65 points, to edge Poplar at 70.

“They bunched up real well and ran exceptional with three of the girls running the varsity race,” said Knutson.

The Coyote girls finished with Shantha Trottier in 9th at 12:32, Brittney Bublitz 10th at 12:33, McKayla Nelson 11th at 12:34, Abbie Kemp 14th at 12:46 and Carly Crazy Bull 21st at 13:18.

Also for Williston, Sam Horack was 36th at 15:11, Mallory Nygard was 39th at 15:22, Rachel Anderson was 42nd at 15:32, Patricia Carnell was 44th at 16:07 and Kurrie Ellingson was 52nd at 18:44.

Leading the Williston runners was Riley Ceglowksi, who was running on her own under the Williston Badlands Track Club to run fifth in 12:19.

For T-TC, Shayna Ottenson was 44th at 16:07.
