WHS runners sweep triangular

By The Williston Herald

With conflicting schedules creating havoc, Williston's first cross country invite turned into a triangular with Watford City and Tioga-Trinity Christian at Spring Lake Park Saturday.

The Williston boys and girls swept the races, which served as a warm-up for the season.

“It was just a chance to get some of the girls aware of the difference between racing and running in practice. I thought we had a real good opening meet,” said girls coach Al Knutson.

The runners did some zig-zagging across the park as Knutson and men's coach Clint Chamberlin provided some new routes.

“I like the venue out there, we were able to loop it back toward the finish a couple of times where the fans could see them better,” said Knutson.

Chamberlin was equally pleased with the way the meet went. “We ran some good times and had an impressive outing. I wasn't surprised a lot, but they did run better than I thought they might,” said Chamberlin.

Both teams will be back at Spring Lake Park for a second Williston Invite at 4:15 p.m. Thursday.

Boys

The Coyotes dominated the varsity race finishing one through seven. “We missed getting the top eight by a second,” said Chamberlin.

Chamberlin said Joe Kemp was able to cruise a bit as he won the race in 13:01, followed by Tanner Goldade at 13:31, Mark Anderson at 13:32 and Taylor Thompson at 14:04.

“We ran pretty close to our time trials, so that was good to see,” said Chamberlin. “They also packed up well and ran together well.”

Girls

While the girls didn't really have a varsity and junior varsity division, Knutson said they ran the girls that were ready in the 3,000-meter race, while the rest ran the 2,000.

“We have a wide variety of girls from once just starting to ones that put in some strong summers, but I was happy with all of them and thought they had made good progress,” said Knutson.

Leading the way was Whitney Harrison, who won the 3,000 race in 11 minutes, 26 seconds, and Knutson said she is looking very good at this point in the season.

He also liked the fact that the girls packed up well in the first mile.

Watford City's Sibee Jokela finished second in 12:04, while Williston's Mari Goldade was third in 12:10.

Winning the 2,000 race was Watford City's Kristen Stenehjem, who finished in 8:51, while Williston's Brittany Bublitz followed at 8:55. Watford City's Jayme Johnson was third at 10:05.
