Gas prices and long fishing trips don't mix

Gone Fishin'

By Dan Bundy

I did something this past weekend I have never done before.

I hesitated at the gas pump, while looking at the price, and decided that $100 was too much to pay to go fishing by myself.

Usually I've made plans to go with someone, but on this particular occasion I was to be alone. The weather was looking great and as unbelievable as it seems, I decided not to make the trip to New Town. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one to find myself making this choice.

But poor planning, on my part, put me in this position and I don't plan on making it a habit.

Still, I surprised myself and my wife and she was quick to pull out the job jar and take advantage of the situation.

I told someone at work that we are going to have to do some boat pooling as well as car pooling if we are going to make that long gas guzzling trip east.

It's a good thing that it won't be long and we won't have to travel that far.

White Earth Bay will soon be clearing up and the fish will be moving up the river. I did keep in contact with some anglers that live in the New Town area and the fish are beginning to move.

Bear Den was producing last week and I would expect the fishing is improving from Hunt's Along Bay and north

Still, I didn't waste the whole weekend and spent some time sighting in my rifle for deer hunting season, which is not too far off.

I have some catching up to do with my wife since this year she will be hunting a doe and I will be looking for a nice mule deer buck.

I'll be looking for something a little bigger than she got last year.

I went with my brother-in-law, Jim Jenks, and he showed me how it is done by laying the first shot dead center in the bulls eye.

I never did hit it, although I did manage to put a nice pattern around it.

I also dug out my bow which has a lot of dust on it and plan on giving it a try as well.

Fishing and hunting are an important part of my life along with most of the people I spend time. While we may have to make changes in the way we get it done, we will get out there and enjoy it as much as we possibly can, even with the high price of fuel.

As always "good fishin".
