Eagles girls cagers upset No. 2 ranked Wolves; Tioga boys tip Wolves

In a District 15 showdown in Class B girls basketball, New Town handed No. 2 ranked Watford City its first loss of the season edging the Wolves 47-45. In other games, Stanley blasted Burke County 61-37 and Mohall blew out Kenmare 49-28.

In Class B boys action, Tioga upended Watford City 75-62, Trinity Christian handled Ray 61-46, Powers Lake defeated Divide County 68-60 and Trenton got by Wildrose-Alamo 48-39.

Girls

NT 47, WC 45

NEW TOWN - New Town's defense shut down the Wolves for two quarters holding Watford City to five in the second and eight in the third to lead by 10 going into the fourth. Watford City rallied in the fourth for 20 points, but the Eagle held off the final push. Sonny Schulz led the Wolves with a game-high 21 points, followed by Ashlee Heiser with 10 and Bethany Mulder with nine.

Kris Wells paced the Eagles with 16 points, while Marlys Lone Bear added 13, Nicole Wells 11 and Kris Wells 10.

LIGNITE - Burke County didn't have an answer for Stanley's Ashley Hollekim who went off for 27 points to lead the Blue Jays. Kayla Sauber scored 10 and Heidi Gray seven.

Burke County's Titans were led by Chasity Johnson with 12 points, while Kayla Anderson and Lauren Rick each scored seven.

KENMARE - The Honkers couldn't get anything rolling on offense stumbling through the first three quarters with single digit scores.

Kenmare was led by Kayla Miller with 13 points and Paige Helmers with 12.

Mohall was paced by Ally Bender's 17 points, while Breanna Abernathy had seven and Ashley Abernathy added six.

TIOGA - A hot first half saw the hometown Pirates score 25 in the second quarter to jump out to a 43-30 halftime lead. Watford City tried to make a run i the fourth quarter, but the Pirates went 19-of-25 at the free throw line in the fourth to seal the win.

Jace Lalim led the Pirates with 20 points and was 17-of-24 from the line, and was 14-of-18 in the fourth quarter. Kevin Hove added 17 points, 11 of which came in the third, and Justin Vejtasa scored 11.

Watford City was led by Shawn Melland's 18 points, followed by Justin Shipman with 10 and Tory Hill with eight.

RAY - Trinity Christian led 29-27 at the break, but opened up a 41-34 lead going into the fourth and clung to the lead the rest of the way.

Kent Grueneich paced the Crusaders with 13 points, followed by Eli Black with 11 and Kyle Ceynar with 10.

Ray was led by Matt Heier with 17 points, while Clint Perdue added 14 and Shane Hill 8.

POWERS LAKE - Divide County rallied from a 10-point deficit to tie the game at 29 at the break, but the Ranchers forged another lead to go ahead 52-43 going into the fourth and then held off another Maroons run.

Powers Lake's Jordan Carlson scored 26 to lead the Ranchers, while Robert Moore added 21 and Lucas Titus had 10.

Derek Benter also scored 26 to lead the Maroons, while Thane Lund and Grant Windfaldet each added 10.

WILDROSE - Standout guard Cameron Hodgkiss was back in the lineup to help lead the Tigers past the Roses. Hodgkiss scored 12 points, while big man Cory Kummer led with 15. Jeremy LaDue chipped in eight.

Wildrose-Alamo was led by E.J. Yarbrough with 17 points, while Brandon Solem scored 12 and Seth Nygaard seven.
